Legal Collaborating With Tech: A Bonanza Or A Curse?

Be it anywhere in the country, all of us are bound by legal rules and regulations and the powers are vested by the Constitution of India through division of powers. India has vast laws and has rules and punishments for the same for the well being of the nation, the place where courts safeguards. In the modern era, where technology has played substantial role all over the world, do the legal culture needs the same?

Legal-tech or tech-legal can be the future. How may technology impact the judicial process. Will it play a role of bonanza or may prove to be a curse to the nation? Also, is it a necessary for technology to step in legal world.

Discussion
Over the span of decades, Government of India has taken phenomenal steps to ameliorate in judiciary. For fast and smooth behaviour of judiciary, hierarchy of courts have been established. We have Supreme Court of India, High Courts, District Courts, Lower Courts, Tribunals, also in 21st century, we do have Arbitration Centres for the same, but having these still lacks something in the legal culture.

Since past few decades, after having the numerous amount of Courts, India still has 45 million cases in pending, with more than 70 thousand cases pending in Supreme Court of India. According to Niti Ayog strategy paper, it will take more than 300 years to clear the cases pending in the nation.

The law was implemented to serve the nation in harmonious manner. But is it serving the purpose for what it was created?
What are the major reasons or the drawbacks of the situation we are into? Complexities of laws, postponing of cases up to the next dates, absence of parties or long investigation time. Do we need our laws to be amended, or we need more judges, or we need to bring something new as the supporting element to work this out?

Method
With technology stepping into judiciary will brisk up the proceeding process. In terms of records and in terms of judgement.

In terms of records
  1. No human errors- with technology in use, no human errors are expected proving it to be fast and functional process, saving time and thus resulting in fast delivery of judgements.
  2. Paper work- With all the work being digitalized, it is easy to access documents from anywhere saving plenty of time resulting in smooth functioning of judiciary
  3. Saving Time in Research- With proper data being uploaded in professional manner, results in speedy responses.
  4. Costs- Saves all the costs regarding paperwork and saves environment as well.
  5. Accessibility- Primary and secondary documents are all safe with being digitalized, thus resulting in less time for research and can be accessed in seconds.
    In terms of Judgements
As far as judgements are relative and results can't be predicted 100% with the algorithms made by the technology, still a part of the pending cases can be adjudicated. With having reference of previous judgements, and the contemporary issue of being depicted in terms of laws, can boost up the judicial proceedings saving plenty of time.

Conclusion
By today or by tomorrow, with increasing number of cases at this pace with limited number of human resources in legal field, we might need technology to play the role of fourth leg to maintain the decorum of judiciary, before the nation lose trust in the procedural way of how law works for them and law may not lose the primary objective of serving the nation. Technology won't suck up the jobs of legal associates but will be a helping hand for all of us.
