Ache Kaam And Gande Kaam: Article 15 A Movie Review

Our country has always been parted into two groups: victims of discrimination and those who discriminate against the former. Caste was an obstacle to the national movement and it still continues to be one of the hurdle for the independent India. It not only divides the society in high and low positions but further creates a sense of untouchability and of being secluded. B.R. Ambedkar was one leader who always raised voice against the ill happenings.

Hence, to curb such practices Article 15 was introduced in the Constituent Assembly on 29 November 1948. Regardless of these laws and policies been made, the evil practices of differencing upper caste and lower caste prevails in the Indian society and such a heinous practice of discrimination on grounds of irrational reasons has been portrayed in the movie ARTICLE 15. Directed by Anubhav Sinha the movie tries to stress upon the use of Article 15 and how people are really not aware about it.

This crime thriller is captivating while unflinchingly bringing light to burning social issues . It is a movie which narrates the tale of social mess that India has yet not been able to break-free even after 74 years, the feudalistic tendencies that still pervades the social structure, the audacity to typecast entire community, callousness of politics, administration and apathy of perhaps the majority towards the lower caste, poor, uneducated.

The story revolves around the girls who were raped because they dared to ask for three more rupees for their daily labor, the corrupt cops who didn't even filed a FIR report just to be in good books of the elite class of the village. Adding to that, It surely cracked our hearts up when the protagonist asked a question; teen rupiah main kya milta hai?.

Besides that, the cops were trying to misinterpret the postmortem reports, leaving the poor fathers of the victims guilty of honor killing, because they wanted to save the powerful people from getting arrested. These incidents made me to stop with the empty platitudinizing, and actually step into the process of thinking about people who live in grime that lies beyond the shining edifices of modern-day India.

But, the IPS Officer, who is also the protagonist very wisely resolved the whole case even after the CBI probed in. He clearly, gave a message that may be it is about "them", but it is unapologetically targeted at us; On how we are ignoring the harsh reality and being greedy . At one point, in a scene he tells a supercilious CBI officer that the money i.e. 3rs which the girls were asking for is the equivalent of a few drops of the mineral water we drink, It's also the equivalent of a few kernels of overpriced popcorn at our local multiplex.

The dialogues accurately displays the reality, duplicity, hypocrisy and insensitivity of our society so boldly and how the threads of our India's social fabric are really undone and wide open with gaping holes. "Article 15" gives an insight about the gruesome system of discrimination that still persist within the roots of the Indian society. The film did justice while portraying the reality in absolute form by carefully bringing out the crux of what we must realize; that we are Human beings at first and it is the collective responsibility of the all the citizens to take a step forward and aware the masses.

The whole narrative makes us conclude that we are a part of the crime, if we typecast between people and the label them with "Ache Kaam" and "Gande Kaam"
