Right to information

RTI is an act of parliament of India, which came into force on 12 Oct, 2005.

Objective:
To promote transparency in the functioning of every public authority.
Under this act, any citizen of India may request information from a public authority which is required to reply within time prescribed under RTI act, 2005.

Public authority- an authority Or body or institution of self government established or constituted:
  • by or under the Constitution
  • by any other law made by parliament or by state legislature.
  • by notification issued or order made by the appropriate government.
Information:
it means any material in any form, including recorder, documents, memos, emails, opinions, advices, press release, circulars, orders, logbooks, contract, report, papers, samples, models, data material held in any electronic form and information relating to any private body which can be accessed by the public authority under any other law for the time being in force.

Cost:
A4 or A3 size paper - Rs 2 for each page plus postage
Diskette or floppy or CD inspection Rs 50 plus postage which is free for first hour and after that increase by ₹5 for per hour.

Time limit: the public authority is required to reply within:
  • 30 days, if application is filed with the PIO
  • 35 days, if application is filed with the assistant PIO.
  • 48 hrs in matters to which the information pertains affects the life and liberty of individual.
Appeal:
first appeal - senior officer
Second appeal-Information Commissioner.
