In today's world, it has become scarier to continue to support women's
rights. The blatant ignorance in regards to women still not being safe or lack
of equality and existing patriarchal norms is rather painful to watch especially
when "Men suffering due to legislations enforced in favour of women" is making
headlines. But at the same point, some women misuse these laws defying their
entire purpose and creating a bad precedent for others.
Yes, that's right. I am talking about the Bengaluru Techie's suicide case.
It is alarming to witness such incidents in India where a man decides to take
his life believing that the justice system is tailored for women.
Is it a wake-up call to protect men and their rights? yes
Is it a reminder to stop protecting women? No
Well presently more than half of India does not agree with this point and I
believe it all roots down to the lack of knowledge of why laws were legislated
in favour of women in the first place. These laws were drafted because the
society back then was patriarchal in nature/male-dominated society. It was
necessary to ensure that women are not violated, subjugated by men or feel
unsafe to pursue their dreams.
Has this scenario changed in the present era? Yes, it has. Women are in a better
place—however, not all of them. There are still grey areas in this regard. If
they are allowed to pursue their dreams, then they are sexually abused in their
workspace. To this date, women do not feel safe walking alone at night on the
streets, no matter how well-lit it is.
But then, it is high time for lawmakers to observe the deficiency in these laws,
where women take advantage of men and their inability to be protected from the
same. It is high time for the authorities to understand how men are often abused
in this regard and what can be done to ensure its discontinuity.
Times have changed wherein, men are often made victims of false rape or abuse
cases, they are asked to pay exorbitant amounts to their spouses, they are
sexually abused etc.
The authorities have to formulate norms that balance the patriarchal setup where
women are still subjugated with the drawbacks in the legislation that fail to
protect men against abuse due to laws favouring women.
The judiciary has to be very alert and thorough in this regard ensuring that
women and men do not end up being exploited by the laws and the Constitution
that are supposed to safeguard their rights and lives.
I do not want to suggest that men be on their guard because that equals asking
women to stay home, neither of which is a long-term solution.
For women's safety, the burden is on the men to act in a dignified manner and
not discriminate, creating a secure space. Likewise, for preventing legal
terrorism the burden is on the authorities to scrutinise cases better and for
women to act responsibly.
