The Benefits Of Digital Education And Creating Awareness Of Cybercrime: An Analysis Wrt Pariksha Pe Charcha Initiative Of The Indian Government

Technology which is revolutionising every aspect of our lives, has also revolutionised education which is an important aspect of every human's life. Digital Education has emerged as a powerful tool, transforming the traditional learning landscape. As everything has a good and a bad side, the increase in the usage of technology and the internet has led to an increase in cybercrime, posing significant challenges to online security.

The Indian government has taken proactive measures recognizing these realities, including the Pariksha Pe Charcha initiative, to promote digital education and create awareness about cybercrime. This article explores the benefits of digital education and highlights the importance of raising awareness about cybercrime within the Pariksha Pe Charcha initiative.

In 2018, the Indian government launched the Pariksha Pe Charcha initiative with a simple yet profound goal - to engage with students and address their exam-related concerns. Translated as "Discussion on Examinations," this initiative has since become an eagerly anticipated annual event, bringing together students, teachers, and parents for an interactive session with the Honorable Prime Minister, Narendra Damodar Das Modi.

The popularity of Pariksha Pe Charcha has soared since its inception, drawing widespread participation across the country. During these sessions, students and parents have a valuable opportunity to interact directly with the Prime Minister and seek guidance on coping with exam stress, managing time effectively, handling expectations, and overcoming academic challenges.

The Pariksha Pe Charcha initiative

Pariksha Pe Charcha is an annual event organized by the Government of India to help students, teachers, and parents deal with the stress of exams. The event is hosted by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, who interacts with the participants and shares his own experiences with exams this event was started in 2018 as PM Modi wanted students not to take exams as a burden but rather celebrate them as a festival. It is part of the more significant initiative "Exam Warriors" which is spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to establish a stress-free environment for young individuals.

The heart of this initiative lies in encouraging students to adopt a positive mindset and approach exams without unnecessary stress. Over the years, Pariksha Pe Charcha has yielded positive results, resonating with students from diverse backgrounds. It serves as a powerful platform for the Prime Minister to inspire and motivate students, instilling in them a strong sense of confidence and self-belief.

Beyond addressing exam-related stress, the initiative has promoted holistic development in education. By fostering a sense of community and brotherhood among students, teachers, and parents, Pariksha Pe Charcha promotes a collaborative approach to education. It has become a symbol of empowerment, unity, and shared aspirations in pursuing knowledge.

It brings together students, parents, teachers, and society as a whole, trying to foster an environment that celebrates and encourages the unique individuality of each child and allows them to express themselves fully. At the heart of this movement is the Prime Minister's book, 'Exam Warriors,' which presents a fresh educational perspective.

The book emphasises the significance of knowledge and holistic development for students, urging everyone to view exams in the right context rather than treating them as life-or-death situations that lead to excessive stress and pressure. To complement the Exam Warriors movement, the Exam Warriors module on the NaMo App incorporates an interactive technological element.

It effectively communicates the key messages contained in each mantra from the Prime Minister's book 'Exam Warriors.' This module is designed not only for young individuals but also for parents and teachers, allowing everyone to embrace the mantras and concepts put forth by the Prime Minister. Through visually represented mantras, the module facilitates easy absorption of the content, and it includes thought-provoking yet enjoyable activities that help individuals apply these concepts in practical ways.

The format of Pariksha Pe Charcha is a question-and-answer session. A competition is arranged and its winners are given a chance to attend the event some of the participants directly interact with the Prime Minister. The participants submit their questions in advance, and the Prime Minister selects a few of them to answer during the event. The questions are from various topics like exam preparation, stress management, and dealing with failure.

In addition to the question-and-answer session, Pariksha Pe Charcha also features several other activities, such as talks by experts on education and psychology and performances by artists and musicians. To ensure participation and impart learning to people from all over the country, the event is live-streamed on the Internet.

Pariksha Pe Charcha has been praised for its impact on students and parents. The event has helped to undermine the stress of exams and promote a more relaxed and positive attitude toward learning. It has also helped to raise awareness of the importance of mental health and well-being.

Moreover, Pariksha Pe Charcha has catalysed various educational reforms. It has spurred discussions on important aspects such as the benefits of digital education, the importance of mental health support in schools, and the significance of skill development alongside traditional academic pursuits. The initiative has inspired educational institutions to integrate innovative teaching methodologies, emphasise experiential learning, and create awareness about emerging challenges in the digital era, including cybercrime.

This year's edition of Pariksha Pe Charcha commenced on 27th January 2023 at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium in New Delhi and was broadcast live on major TV channels. During a media briefing, Shri Pradhan emphasised the significance of Pariksha Pe Charcha in helping students overcome exam stress and transforming it into a widespread movement.

He highlighted the positive impact of the initiative, which has boosted students' self-confidence, stress management abilities, and overall well-being. Around 2,400 students will directly benefit from the Prime Minister's guidance at the Talkatora Stadium, while millions of others will watch the program live from their respective schools.

This year's registrations for Pariksha Pe Charcha have surpassed previous years, with over 38.80 lakh registrations, including more than 16 lakhs from State Boards. Participants have registered from 155 countries. Additionally, around 20 lakh questions have been received, covering various topics such as family pressure, stress management, unfair means prevention, maintaining good health, and career selection. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has shortlisted questions for the program.

During the event, special guests included 80 winners of the Kala Utsav competition, along with 102 students and teachers from across the country. Participants also had the opportunity to visit important national sites to learn about the country's rich heritage. The winners of Kala Utsav and students and teachers from different states also witnessed the Republic Day parade on 26th January 2023 and the Beating Retreat on 29th January 2023.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi authored the book 'Exam Warriors in 2018, which has gained immense popularity. In response, the book is now being published in 11 Indian languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Revised editions in Hindi and English have also been published.

As a precursor to Pariksha Pe Charcha 2023, a painting competition was organised on 23rd January, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Approximately 50,000 students from various schools participated in the competition, paying tribute to Netaji and creating paintings based on the mantras provided by the Prime Minister in the 'Exam Warriors' book.

Benefits of Digital Education

Digital education is a type of education that uses technology as a medium of education or education is supported by technology. It is beneficial for everyone, including teachers, students, institutions, and parents. It has evolved the way the students learn and made the learning procedure more interactive and engaging.

Digital education components:

  • Content: A Catalyst for Engaging Learning
At the heart of effective digital education lies its content - a dynamic and multi-faceted element that serves as a catalyst for an engaging learning journey. A prime example of this can be seen through Byju's, an educational platform that stands out for its exceptional content offerings. Byju goes beyond conventional teaching materials, crafting content that not only facilitates learning but also infuses an element of enjoyment and effortlessness into the process. This is achieved through the integration of interactive audio-visual tools and real-life examples, which not only captivate the students' attention but also deepen their understanding of the subjects.

  • Platform: The Bridge to Seamless Learning
The platform on which educational content is delivered plays a pivotal role in the effectiveness of digital education. Byju's, for instance, recognizes the significance of this aspect and has strategically chosen tablets from reputable brands such as Samsung or Lenovo to serve as the conduit for their educational materials. These tablets provide a robust and user-friendly platform, allowing students to access the meticulously crafted content with ease. One noteworthy feature is the convenience that comes with this choice - upon placing an order, the tablet is promptly delivered to the student's doorstep. To ensure a smooth initiation, an online demo accompanies the delivery, guiding students through the initial steps of using the platform effectively.

  • Infrastructure for Delivery
Supporting the platform and content is the infrastructure for delivery, a critical component that ensures the accessibility and availability of educational resources. Byju's employs a comprehensive infrastructure that not only guarantees timely delivery of the learning devices but also extends to the ongoing technical support required by the users. This robust infrastructure ensures that students and educators can seamlessly access the educational content and utilize the platform to its fullest potential, thereby eliminating any hindrances that might impede the learning process.

Students benefit from digital education in several ways. They can attend classes, work on projects and assignments, seek clarification for doubts, access recorded lectures, obtain soft copies of study materials, and submit their work from anywhere in the world at any time. Students can access a vast range of books, journals, and articles published worldwide through a remote student/faculty login ID and password. Furthermore, students enjoy a personalised learning experience where courses and classes are tailored to accommodate their availability, prior qualifications, work history, and other specific requirements.

Digital education brings numerous benefits to academic institutions, parents, and teachers. Academic institutions can streamline their activities and save time and money through digital education. They can easily conduct online exams and promptly publish results. Digital tools facilitate knowledge transfer from teachers to students, ensuring equal access for all. Interactive audio-visual teaching content helps in sticking, fosters student engagement and enhances learning outcomes.

Institutions offering digital education gain a competitive advantage over those without integrated feature-based learning and management systems. Moreover, digital platforms enable seamless communication between institutions and parents, accommodating busy schedules and allowing parents to access their child's attendance records, syllabus progress, assignments, and exam schedules and results. Parents can conveniently pay school fees and track their child's presence in class.

For teachers, digital education sparks interest and enables effective interaction with students. It aids in efficient time management and content delivery, providing access to class-related information, daily timetables, assignments, teaching history, events, and holidays. Overall, digital education empowers academic institutions, parents, and teachers by optimising processes, enhancing communication, and improving educational experiences.

Challenges in Online Education

Online education has opened up new avenues for learning in India, but it's not without its array of challenges. These are concrete issues that need to be addressed to ensure the effective delivery of education across the nation.
  1. Digital Infrastructure Disparities
    • The digital divide is a significant hurdle in the adoption of online education. While urban areas have relatively better access to high-speed internet and technological devices, rural regions and economically disadvantaged communities face a considerable lack of reliable connectivity. This gap exacerbates the existing educational inequalities, preventing many students from accessing online learning resources and virtual classrooms.

  2. Accessibility and Affordability of Devices: A Pressing Concern
    • The affordability and availability of devices needed for online learning is a practical challenge. For students in low-income households, acquiring smartphones, laptops, or tablets can be financially burdensome. Additionally, the recurring costs of data plans can pose further barriers. This scenario limits the participation of a significant segment of the population in digital education.

  3. Limited Teacher Training for Virtual Instruction: A Skill Gap
    • Adapting to online teaching methods demands a specific skill set that not all educators possess. Many teachers are unfamiliar with the nuances of virtual instruction, including the effective use of digital tools and platforms. The transition requires comprehensive training to ensure that educators can seamlessly navigate the digital realm while delivering quality content and maintaining student engagement.

  4. Engagement and Motivation: A Digital Disconnect
    • Sustaining student engagement in the virtual environment presents its own set of challenges. The absence of face-to-face interaction and the distractions inherent to online platforms can lead to reduced student motivation. Educators must explore innovative ways to maintain participation levels through interactive content, real-time feedback, and dynamic learning experiences.

  5. Reliable Assessment Methods: Ensuring Academic Integrity
    • The credibility of online assessments is a concern that institutions must address. Preventing cheating and ensuring the authenticity of students' work during remote assessments require robust online proctoring mechanisms. Striking the right balance between assessment security and students' privacy is an ongoing challenge that institutions need to tackle effectively.

  6. Inclusivity for Diverse Learners: Tailoring Education
    • Online education's ability to cater to diverse learning needs is another challenge that needs attention. Ensuring that digital platforms are accessible to differently-abled students poses technical challenges, from creating screen reader-compatible content to providing sign language interpretation for video lectures.

Creating awareness of cybercrime

In today's rapidly advancing digital landscape, the convergence of web technologies, social networks, and mobile advancements has paved the way for cybercrime and the spread of illicit content on the Internet.

The youngest and most vulnerable among us, children and teenagers, are not only the avid users of these technologies but also the most susceptible to their dangers. Their limited life experience and trust in the digital world open them to manipulation and exploitation by cybercriminals.

Yet, this issue extends beyond the younger generation. The broader public remains largely unaware of the severity of cyber threats, underestimating the risks posed by cybercrime and illegal content dissemination.

As experts, it is our responsibility to confront these challenges head-on. By launching comprehensive education and awareness campaigns, we can empower parents, teachers, and guardians with the knowledge and tools to protect young minds from online perils. By creating a culture of vigilance and responsibility, we can enable individuals to make informed decisions and safeguard themselves and their loved ones from the detrimental effects of cybercrime and illicit content.

The integration of web technologies, social networks, and mobile devices has given rise to cybercrime and the spread of illegal content. To protect our youth and the wider public, we must raise awareness and promote responsible digital behavior. Together, we can create a safer online environment for all.

Cybercrime prevention strategies

Developing a comprehensive framework to address cybercrime requires a strategic approach encompassing five key strategies.
  1. Raising awareness among the citizens is crucial. A national cybersecurity education campaign can help to educate individuals about the risks associated with cyber activity and promote the adoption of lowest-level protective measures on various devices. Emphasizing the importance of strong passwords, timely system updates, firewall deployment, and cautious behavior regarding email links and attachments is essential.

  2. Secondly, taking leverage of the trusted resources is vital. Establishing and maintaining an online repository of information on cybersecurity best practices is necessary for users of all levels of expertise. Collaborating with organizations such as the National Cyber Security Alliance or utilizing existing initiatives like the Stop… Think… Connect campaigns can enhance the effectiveness of awareness campaigns.

  3. Thirdly, a risk management approach should guide investment decisions in cybersecurity. Instead of indiscriminately purchasing every new tool or product, organizations should assess their specific needs and prioritize investments based on cost-effectiveness.

  4. Fourthly, fostering collaboration with invested partners is crucial. Establishing joint public-private operational capabilities that facilitate information sharing, analysis, and collaboration is vital to enhance cyber event detection, prevention, mitigation, and response. Drawing lessons from organizations like the National Weather Service and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can provide insights into leveraging technology and data analytics for early alerts and recommendations.

  5. Finally, implementing a National Cyber Incident Response Plan is essential. This plan should recognize the unique nature and risks of cyber events and provide a clear framework delineating the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders during different escalation thresholds. Operational playbooks focusing on critical infrastructure should accompany this framework to ensure effective ground truth and situational awareness during cyber events.
Addressing cybersecurity requires a coherent, collaborative, and coordinated approach across all stakeholders, including the federal government, state and local agencies, and industry partners. It is crucial to acknowledge the global nature of cyber risks and work together to establish cyber deterrence agreements and norms of conduct. By actively participating in improving individual and collective cybersecurity and adopting protective measures, we can collectively combat cyber threats and create a safer digital environment.
